City moves to address water challenges

In preparation for National Water Week, the eThekwini Municipality is exploring new methods to save water and prevent mass water wastage.

THE eThekwini Municipality is at the advanced stages of procuring a satellite leak detector that will assist in detecting water leaks in the City.

In a statement the Municipality said the detector will be a game changer for the City as it will help to provide solutions to current water challenges.

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said he welcomed the initiative adding that the new detector will provide sustainable solutions to water challenges facing the city.

“This will assist to increase revenue by reducing water wasted through leaks,” he said.

Mayor Kaunda said the Municipality is currently in partnership with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) which has constructed the Remix Demonstration Plant to demonstrate new energy efficient and environmentally friendly desalination technology.

“This technology will also  provide sustainable solutions to water challenges facing the City,” said Kaunda.

“These initiatives are evidence that the City is working tirelessly on projects that provide solutions to water challenges. This means improved availability of water for residents,” he said.

Mayor Kaunda appeals to the public to work with the City to respond to water challenges. “We encourage residents to use water wisely and to report acts of theft and vandalism of water infrastructure through illegal connections, leaks and any other illegal activities. This will reduce constant interruption of water supply and ensure water security for all residents,” he said.
