Eden College inducts new Interact Club president

Interact, an abbreviation of International Action consists of 16,673 clubs involving 383,479 interactors across the globe.

THE Rotary Club of Durban recently visited Eden College recently as the school’s Interact Club inducted their 2022 president, Grade 11 learner, Andiswa Cele.

Speaking to Berea Mail, Cele said she was excited for the challenge ahead. “I will try my best to uphold my school’s standards,” she said. Cele joined the Interact Club when she started her Grade 10 year, as an act of service to her community.

“I like to help others and assist in any way possible,” she said.

Her goals for the year include starting new service projects to help others. She said the club typically volunteers for the SPCA, Cupcakes for Cancer and collects shoes for a drive to assist those in need. Eden College educator, Phyllis Walsh facilitates the school’s Interact Club. “Eden learners are outstanding – they go over and above what is expected. They perform in multiple committees,” she said.

Speaking at the induction, president of the Rotary Club of Durban, John Johnston-Webber said Interact, an abbreviation of International Action consists of 16,673 clubs involving 383,479 interactors across the globe.

“Exactly a year ago the numbers stood at 15,482 clubs and 356,086 interactors. This means that over the past year Interact has grown by 1191 new clubs. Likewise, we have 27393 more interactors now than this time last year. This is very encouraging,” he said.

Speaking to the learners, Johnston-Webber said all Interact clubs operate under a selected Rotary club with The Rotary Club of Durban being the mother club to Eden College.

“Remember, you are part of a worldwide group, which we can call ‘the bigger picture and our club is there to be of assistance to you whenever you need us,” he said.

Johnston-Webber said Eden College Interact Club was formed in 2011, open to learners in Grade 8 to 12. There are currently about 40 learners involved in the club.

“A benefit of being an interactor is to develop and recognise constructive leadership and integrity in each interactor. The aim of Interact is to provide an opportunity for learners to work together in a fellowship dedicated to community service,” he said.
