Durban concert pays tribute to composer Roelof Temmingh

Roelof Temmingh Snr is remembered in this special show as his son performs on piano and his brother takes to the conductor's podium.

CLASSICAL music fans won’t want to miss the third concert in the KZNPO Summer Symphony Summer Series at The Playhouse in Durban.

Taking place on Thursday, March 10 at 19:00, the concert features a Concerto by the late South African composer, Roelof Temmingh. Roelof Temmingh Jnr will perform his father, Roelof Temmingh Snr’s concerto while his uncle and KZN Philharmonic’s resident conductor, Lykele Temmingh, will take the podium.

Through the performance, Temmingh Jnr pays tribute to his father, as the concert marks the tenth anniversary of his father’s passing.

Composer and organist, Roelof Temmingh Snr (1946 – 2012) was well known in South Africa as a leading composer. His music has been extensively performed throughout the country, and abroad in Europe and North America. For 31 years he was a music lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch until he retired in 2004.

Lykele, a founding member of KZNPO, will open his program with Janáček’s Adagio for Orchestra. Roelof Temmingh Jnr completed his undergraduate studies and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree, at the Royal College of Music in London.

He has performed in piano quartets at Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall. Further performances include solo and chamber music recitals in South Africa, UK, US, France, Spain, Sweden, and Austria.

Tickets R50 at the door. The bars are no longer open at the Playhouse; however complimentary tea and coffee will be served prior to evening concerts and during intervals. Season tickets for the KZN Philharmonic’s World Symphony Series 2022 Summer Season are available through Quicket.
