The Jogging Journalist: Challenge off to a good start

This week the jogging journalist meets a fun Glenwood couple getting fit for their wedding.

Community news reporting calls for journalists to step into a community and hear its heartbeat, record the daily struggles and joys of the residents. To take things up a notch, Berea Mail journalist, Danica Hansen has decided to take part in Stella Athletic Club’s Couch to 10km Challenge. Watch her journey unfold in the diary of The Jogging Journalist. Today we bring you the first vlog in the series.

THE community came out in their numbers for the Couch to 10km Challenge, which kicked off at Stella Sports Club on Tuesday, February 23.

About 50 people joined in as running coach Dave Beattie led a 5km walk through scenic Glenwood.

“We will be walking for the first two sessions. For any fitness challenge, you need to build a base first. It’s like a recipe. If you don’t get the base right, you won’t be able to develop your fitness. In training, you need to work in increments and build yourself up bit by bit. If you walk 5km one day and then run 5km the next day, you will end up will all sorts of injuries,” he said.

Among the community members taking up the challenge was Lauren Fontaine (36) who found a mentor on veteran runner, Pat Fisher (70) who has completed 30 Comrades Marathons.

“I am going to mentor Lauren and make sure she completes a 10km run, even if we start with a 5km,” said Fisher.
