Covid-19 cases spike once again at Tafta

A total of 33 elders' lives have been lost to the Covid-19 pandemic at Tafta.

AFTER a recent lull, seven Covid-19 cases have been recorded at The Association for The Aged in Durban (Tafta).

“Just when we thought Covid-19 was finally on the wane, cases at some of our homes began rising again. By mid-January, we had a total of seven positive cases – six elders and one staff member, which brings the total infection rate during the fourth wave to 84,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

The association decided not to enforce lockdowns at its homes, but to continue to keep Covid-19 protocols in place.

“We are monitoring the situation and encouraging elders to continue wearing their masks and following social distancing guidelines, even if they’re vaccinated,” said Shamam.

The association recorded two deaths over the festive period. Shamam said the residents who passed away were unvaccinated.

“Their deaths bring the number of lives lost to 33 elders and one staff member since the start of the pandemic in 2020. We remember each person with affection, and extend our deepest sympathy to their families,” she said.
