Viral comedy star set to tour SA

Andrew Hughes began his comedy career doing stand-up shows but has recently taken social media by storm.

LOCAL comedian, Andrew Hughes, is preparing to go on tour in collaboration with the Friends of SA Comedy. Joining him on the tour will be comedian Carvin Goldstone, known for his gut-busting stand-up comedy, and local hip hop duo, Chuckie and Paul, who make up the rap group TRO, known for their famous hits such as Hey Owens.

Andrew began his comedy career in 2016 when he entered a comdian search hosted by Carvin, who he would eventually work alongside. According to Andrew, he always had a comedic flare, “I always had it in me, I was the one who everyone would always look to for a laugh, in my family, amongst my friends, even at work, I’ve always been a jokester.”

After he was selected in Carvin’s comedy search, he began doing stand-up comedy, that was until he discovered the vast medium of social media. During the first lockdown Andrew said he had time on his hands and he decided to play around and explore the content creation aspect of social media. “Lockdown was where the whole social media thing took off, I had time  to really capture a new side of myself and my comedy and I also had time to work on and grow it into what it is today.”

He now has more than 25 000 followers on his Facebook account and has become an overnight, viral sensation. His hilarious videos on social media caught the attention of viewers with its off the cuff style of humour, “I don’t rehearse my videos, I have the idea in my head but I don’t know exactly what to say.” “I try to make it happen as naturally as possible, the way that funny things happen in real life, the characters I create are unintentionally funny, because they are based on real life people and experiences.”

Andrew is originally from Ixopo, where he said there are a diverse range of people, “I try to be versatile with my comedy, I don’t stay in a box. I have met people all around our city and our province and we all have different life experiences, but what comedy does it, it points out the things that are common to all of us and regardless of our differences we can all laugh together, that’s the beauty of it.”

When speaking about the upcoming shows, the ‘Mainou’s On Tour’, he said, “We are offering people something different. There will be music, good food, and comedy in between.” The tour is set to begin in March and will be stopping in ten towns across the province over a three-week period, the musical and comedy acts will journey to the North Coast, South Coast and Inland. Look out on the performers social media pages for tour dates.
