Taxi drivers help SAPS nab robbery suspect

The suspect paid for three plates of food before robbing the street vendor.

A ROBBERY suspect has landed in the dock today, February 17 after Durban Central SAPS found him with a stolen cellphone after he robbed a street vendor in the Durban CBD.

The robbery took place on the corner of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street and Victoria Street on Tuesday, February 15 at about 13:00 and the suspect was arrested in Tongaat.

Sergeant Zanele Khomo of Durban Central SAPS said their crime prevention unit apprehended the suspect with the help of a few taxi drivers. Khomo said the suspect purchased three plates of food from the street vendor before asking to borrow her phone.

“The complainant gave her cellphone to the customer who ran away with the cellphone. The complainant then went to the taxi rank where the suspect works and reported the matter. With the help of taxi drivers, the suspect was located and police arrested the suspect inside Tongaat taxi rank,” said Khomo.

The suspect is expected to appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
