Sail Africa wins big at sustainability awards

The award was handed over at Point Yacht Club in Durban.

LOCAL organisation, Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation won a whopping 10 000 USD in cash as part of the 2022 World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award.

An award ceremony was held at Point Yacht Club on Tuesday, February 15.

Sail Africa chairperson, Nigel Milln said the organisation was founded by Graig Miller with a vision to give back to local communities.

The organisation, based in Durban at the Roi aims to introduce children to sailing in a fun way.

The operations director for Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation,  Jackie de Fin said the award ceremony was well attended.

“When we started out on this journey none of us ever envisaged such an achievement.  While awards are not the reason for doing things, it is wonderful to receive recognition because it validates what we do,” she said.

“Sail Africa has served the community over the years with dedication and vision.  We value our partnerships because without them we cannot offer the opportunities we do to our young people,” said de Fin.

The eThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) was established in 2009 with the mandate to promote the blue oceans economy.

Through this mandate, EMC formed a partnership with Sail Africa Youth Foundation to promote sustainable development for youth.

At Tuesday’s ceremony, EMC board chairperson, Hans Modipane, thanked Sail Africa for offering youth from disadvantaged communities the opportunity to explore the world of sailing.

“The eThekwini Maritime Cluster will continue to work in collaboration with those entities with an interest in economic development, job creation, and youth development. I would like to congratulate Sail Africa Youth Development for this deserved award. No nation can sustain itself without developing its youth,” he said.

Modipane cited the United Nations statistics, saying youth make up 16% of the global population.

“Youth are the torch bearers of the 2030 agenda and they are the ones who will contribute to achieving sustainable goals,” said Modipane.
