DUT slams fake news calling for on-campus registration

THE Durban University of Technology has debunked a message circulating on social media that called for walk-ins, parents and students to report to the university for registration.

In a statement, DUT communications manager, Noxolo Memela said, “DUT has noted with disbelief the malicious fake news circulated on social media platforms.”

The university urged parents, students, staff, and all DUT stakeholders to access university-related communique through official DUT communication platforms.

The university communicates with registered students via its DUT4Life accounts and statements are made available on the DUT website: https://www.dut.ac.za. 

Both registration and classes remain online and messages suggesting otherwise have been debunked by the university.

“DUT did not issue a statement calling for walk-ins or first years to register on campus. Registration will continue to be online. When lectures commence on Monday, February 21, the University will continue to offer multimodal, online teaching and learning to returning students,” said Memela. 

Students will only be permitted access on campus if they meet the criteria of the Policy Choices on Vaccination of Staff and Students.

This policy was approved by the university council on December 4,  2021, and came into effect in January.

“Permits to access campus will only be granted to first-year students and students who are enrolled for exit modules, to attend mask-to-mask lectures on campus. Other permits will be issued to students who require access to the practical laboratories and students whose conditions at home are not conducive to learning,” said Memela.

While online registration was scheduled to end last Friday, February 11, the university extended the online registration period by one week, allowing prospective students until Friday, February 18 to register online.

Lectures intended to start on Monday, February 14 have been postponed until Monday, February 21 in line with the registration extension.
