Keep your fitness goals on track with Stella

Reaching health and fitness goals is easier with community support.

WITH January over, most New Year’s resolutions are beginning to fade.

While health and fitness goals are common resolutions, reaching those goals can seem impossible, especially without a support system in tow.

That’s where Stella Athletic Club comes in. The club is launching it’s ‘Couch to 10km’ fitness program, with biweekly training sessions held at the club over a 10 week period from February 22 until April 28.

Participants can join both sessions at the club at 17:00 or take part virtually.

Chairperson of the Stella Athletic Club, Kevin Hendrikse said sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays through a dedicated training program at Stella Sports Club.

“We have a designated training plan we will share with those who attend. It’s a guide for them to follow during the 10 week program. At the end we will host a 10km run for all the participants. They will graduate with a certificate when they complete the 10km run,” he said.

“You don’t have to be here. We have a participant in Johannesburg taking part in the training program virtually, although, it’s ideal to be here to enjoy the camaraderie and exercise with like-minded people,” said Hendrikse.

The club offers a wealth of knowledge to new runners.

“Stella running club is probably one of the oldest established running clubs in the greater Durban area. One of the things we pride ourselves on is that we are a community driven club. Within our club we have a lot of active members and some established runners. Many of our runners have done multiple Comrades Marathons. Two women and one man in our club who have run more than 30 Comrades Marathons each. With that, comes great expertise. We are counting on their expertise to help people who are generally unfit to become more active,” said Hendrikse.

It was that same community-centric ethos that inspired the club to host the ‘Couch to 10km’ challenge

“We know people have got New Year’s resolutions, they want to start exercising and getting their bodies back in shape. We thought this would be a great way to help people get active,” said Hendrikse.

Hendrikse said sessions are time based rather than distance based, allowing runners of all abilities to get the most from the training, while offering new runners a gentle introduction to running.

“It’s a transition from walking to running,” he said.
