Orchestra calls on music maestros

The century-old orchestra began as the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra and was later known as the Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra, before it became DC.

THE Durban City Orchestra (DCO) has embarked on a recruitment drive and hopes to inspire young musicians as well as continue to grow a love for music among locals. The century-old orchestra began as the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra and was later known as the Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra, before it became DCO. It is one of the longest-running orchestras in the country and has performed at various community venues throughout KwaZulu-Natal. “Recruitment of players is an on-going process for community orchestras worldwide, and the DCO is no exception. We currently wish to supplement our strings, including the lower strings, viola and double bass, and vacancies are also available in our woodwind and brass sections,” said Francis Smith, a committee member and violinist. Participation in the orchestra adds to the growth of the players and offers the chance of a special and uplifting experience. Smith said, “Concert performances are staggered throughout the year. We strive to tailor the choice of concert programmes to audience tastes and important season-related dates. A range of musical genres is covered in our concerts, with an emphasis on classical scores by the recognised composers. We also offer themed programmes, which go down equally well.” Despite the pandemic constraining opportunities for the DCO, especially to perform publicly, it has still, however, managed to stage several concerts at different venues during 2020 and 2021. “For up-and-coming instrumental musicians, playing ensemble style, especially in an orchestra, is a wonderful activity which is to be encouraged and used to the betterment of not only oneself but for others. Budding musicians should be encouraged to never underestimate the long-term value of their musical talent. The DCO is entering an expansion phase to dovetail with greater opportunities for public performances, in tandem with the expectation that the current pandemic risk recently shows promising signs of better management, and this trend is positive for all,” said Smith. It also includes two accomplished and professionally active musicians in Charl van der Merwe, as resident conductor, and Jitske Brien, as concertmaster. The DCO meets weekly for rehearsals and welcomes interest from other musicians. Those who are keen, with at least Grade 6 theory and practical competency, are encouraged to contact Francis Smith on 072 297 1617.
