Tafta records 255 Covid cases since pandemic hit Durban

Covid-19 cases first appeared in Tafta homes in June 2020.

IN June 2020, the first Covid-19 case was recorded at The Association for The Aged (Tafta). Since then, the association has recorded 255 Covid-19 cases among elders with 32 deaths. There have been 66 cases among staff members, with one death, and a total of 281 recoveries.

“During the fourth wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, we recorded a total of 84 infections, with only one fatality. We are extremely saddened to have lost an unvaccinated elder at St Martins Village over the festive period. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and loved ones and remain with those who are still Covid-19 positive,” said Tafta CEO, Femada Shamam.

With the spike in infections, Shamam, said the organisation was wary of Covid-19 restrictions spoiling Christmas for their elders.

“After more than three weeks without Covid-19 infections in any of our Tafta Homes, we recorded an increasing amount of positive cases in the first week of December,” said Shamam.

Staff closely monitored the number of infections to ensure the elders’ safety and opted for takeaway festive meals at homes where Covid-19 infections were recorded.

Over the festive period, the organisation served 1500 meals to elders at Tafta Homes and Wellness Centres thanks to donations from their sponsors.
