BLUE Lagoon and Umgeni Beach will remain closed and the other beaches that were closed due to the high levels of E. coli have been opened with immediate effect.
The eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said the City made the decision to re-open the other beaches for bathing and other sporting activities after the latest test results were received. These include Umhlanga main beach, Bronze Beach, Westbrook Beach, Umdloti Beach, Point Beach, Ushaka Beach, Addington Beach, South Beach and Wedge Beach.
The Bluff beaches, Brighton and Ansteys were also closed due to high levels of E-coli.
The Southern beaches that were closed are: Reunion Park, Pipeline, Amanzimtoti main beach, Warner, Winkle and Umgababa.

In all other beaches, tests results have shown a substantial decrease of the bacteria to acceptable standards,” said Mayisela.
According to Mayisela, the eThekwini Municipality will continue to monitor the two beaches and will notify the public once the E. coli levels have decreased to a standard that is deemed safe for public use.
“In the interest of public safety, and with heavy downpours expected in catchment areas of rivers that empty their waters to the City’s beaches, regular tests are going to be conducted to ensure good water quality,” said Mayisela.
