Calling all nature lovers – join Pigeon Valley walk this weekend

Nature lovers are sure to enjoy this guided walk through the Pigeon Valley, a nature reserve in the heart of Glenwood.

THE first monthly Pigeon Valley nature walk of the year will be held on Saturday, January 8 and the Berea community is invited.

The walk starts at 07:30 and participants can meet outside the Pigeon Valley entrance at 60 Princess Alice Avenue.

Crispin Hemson, a Glenwood resident and chair of the Friends of Pigeon Valley, said walkers can expect to see a range of plants and birds on the walk.

“Anyone can join the walk and it is free. Shoes suitable for wet and soft soil are needed. The walk is about 90 minutes long, but people are free to leave when they wish,” he said.

Nature lovers can tag along to relax and enjoy Glenwood’s outdoors.

“There is no specific focus for the walk – most of what we focus on depends on what we observe, and birds and plants differ according to the season,” said Hemson.

Walkers are sure to gain from Hemson’s in-depth knowledge of the various species in the nature reserve. Over the years, Hemson has contributed more than 120 articles to the Berea Mail in a weekly series entitled: Exploring Pigeon Valley.

The nature enthusiast said he visits Pigeon Valley once or twice a day. He has been working to clear alien invasive plants from the valley for more than 30 years.
