Durban’s hip-hop artist rises in the ranks with new EP

The muso says his music production and song writing communicates everyday experiences, thoughts and ideas.

AS a music producer and rapper, Mnqobi Ngcobo hopes to use his talents to encourage the youth to pursue their dreams in the music industry.

Known in the Durban hip-hop scene as OB MagiK, he recently released his new EP, For the Taking.

“This EP is about taking power and achieving goals. it’s about going after what you want and making your mark in any field because success is there for the taking,” he said.

His early musical influences include legends such as Tupac, Eminem and Dr Dre.

“I am a self-taught music producer who has cultivated his talent and skills over the past 13 years,” said Ngcobo.

Ngcobo said he began his career as a rapper in 2008, when he was 13 years old.

“At that time, my stage name was ‘Peace’ because I was inspired by Tupac’s music and the beats that Dr Dre made. It gave birth to my love for making beats and producing. I have never looked back,” he said.

This artist said the magic behind various musical projects focuses around the heart of Durban and its townships.

“Although I am known for music composition, I am a hip-hop artist whose music cuts through with intelligent rhymes and a unique music style that resonates,” he said.

When asked about his goals in life, Ngcobo said it is to become the greatest musician in South Africa.

“I want my music to receive worldwide recognition because I want to better my life and change other people’s lives in a  positive way,” he said.

He has produced multiple projects for artists such as Childish Play, Thee Legacy, and Mthinay Tsunam.
