Glenwood substation receives UIP makeover

Umcebo Design repainted the mural in bright, durable colours.

THE Glenwood Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) recently commissioned Umcebo Design, a local art collective, to repaint a mural on a substation at the intersection of Davenport Road and Lena Ahrens Road (Manning Road).

The mural represents a collage of African textures, colours and fabrics.

It also represents triumph over adversity and the ability for people to stand together and create a new brighter future, explained Vernon Stokes, the Glenwood UIP director.

“We are very happy with the mural. We really hope it will brighten people’s days through the Festive Season as they drive through this busy intersection.”

Robin Opperman, the director of Umcebo Design, thanked the Glenwood UIP for the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of Glenwood.

“The original mural was painted on the substation in December last year. Since then, we have learnt so much about the right paints to use and so many other new skills. Given that the original mural had faded badly, the UIP commissioned us to get the best quality paint and repaint the mural, making use of all the new skills we had accumulated in a year of mural painting. We were so grateful for this opportunity,” said Opperman.

When asked about the plans for Umcebo Design in the New Year, he said they hope to work on more murals as well as an exciting, creative landscape art project.

“We will share more details as they become available in the New Year,” he added.
