Glenwood publicist shares 4 family-friendly Boxing Day ideas

Illa Thompson is the owner of Publicity Matters and co-ordinator of the Denis Hurley Street Lit project.

THE hustle and bustle of the festive period starts to slow down on the Day of Goodwill, which falls on December 26.

Also known as Boxing Day, this public holiday offers South Africans a day to enjoy family time or catch up with friends.

The Berea Mail chatted to Illa Thompson, a Glenwood resident and publicist, who shared her top four activities in the Berea, and beyond.

Thompson noted that there are two holidays this year, the Day of Goodwill on Sunday, December 26 and the public holiday that falls on Monday, December 27.

“These are days to exhale, be outdoors, stretch your legs a bit, raid the fridge for leftovers and find nice, holiday things to do. In Glenwood, where I live, we know our neighbours and live fairly communally. I suspect there will be lots of house visits involving pots of tea, mince pies and the obligatory leftovers,” said Thompson.

Here are four activities the whole family can enjoy.

Take a walk

With the Durban Botanic Gardens in the heart of Berea, residents have a tranquil setting to enjoy a family walk.

“A stroll around Durban Botanic Gardens, which is open daily throughout the festive season, is always a good way to get some fresh air and exercise after a lazy Christmas,” said Thompson

Watch a show

If a walk sounds a little too athletic, why not settle in for a show instead?

“A trip to the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo to watch a screening of the Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker, feels like a festive thing to do,” she said.

There is a screening on Monday, December 27 at 14:00 and 18:30 and the screening runs until January 9.

Soak up some art

Glenwood is home to the KZNSA Gallery, which is filled with plenty of local art to enjoy and a tranquil setting to relax and unwind.

The KZNSA Gallery is open on Monday, December 27.

Take a train ride

A train ride is a fun way to enjoy family time for those with a taste for adveenture.

“If one wants to head further afield, up to Kloof, the Umgeni Steam Train has trips at 12.30 on  Sunday, December 26 and 08.30 and 12.30 on Monday, December 27 – which is one of my favorite things to do in the whole wide world,” said Thompson.
