CHRISTMAS time is the perfect opportunity to spend time with your family, and what better way to do that than with a new, family Christmas tradition.
Highway residents and philanthropists share some of their treasured family traditions.

Swap Christmas deco for chocolate
Philanthropist and swimmer, Stephen Hunt said his family loves to decorate the Christmas tree with chocolates, instead of the usual Christmas decorations.
“It generally doesn’t last very long and, by Christmas Day, we have all gained 3kg,” laughed Hunt.

Secret Santa
Author and entrepreneur, Denice Stainbank’s family is all about gifts. Her family’s favourite Christmas tradition is Secret Santa.
“Because we have a big family, we all buy gifts for the kids and we each pick a secret pal from the adults. My parents and my siblings each pick a name and buy a gift that we only reveal on Christmas Day.”
“We started it years ago and it brings us together as we each go out of our way to get the best gift for our secret pal. Everyone tries to figure out who is buying for whom. It’s funny, wholesome and a beautiful way to show appreciation and care for each other,” said Stainbank.
Give to charity
Warren Brauns, the chairman of local rescue company, Rescuetech, said his family loves a good movie and hot chocolate.
“Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are all about our family. Christmas Eve is movie night with hot chocolate, a good Christmas movie, and some games. Christmas day is all about a good cook up. This is normally a roast or traditional South African pojtie,” he shared.
This family also use this season to share with the less fortunate.
“This year we are going into the Valley of 1 000 Hills and handing out goodies and sweets with the amazing team members of the 4×4 Charity Drive,” added Brauns.

Carols by candlelight
Karen Le Grange, a mom and author, said Christmas wouldn’t be merry without carols by candlelight.
“We love spending quality family time together over the Christmas season. We love going to carols by candlelight, decorating the Christmas tree, seeing the Christmas lights and having a fun, summer holiday,” Karen added.
