Umbilo residents enjoy festive feast

While Durban Meals on Wheels delivers regular meals to Lantern Heath, this week residents enjoyed Christmas treat.

THERE were smiles all round as the Durban Meals on Wheels hosted a Christmas party for residents of Lantern Heath in Umbilo on Monday, December 13.

Sharon Moodley of Durban Meals on Wheels said they ‘adopted’ Lantern Heath as one of its beneficiaries. It deliver meals on a weekly basis, from Monday to Friday. For the Christmas party, they catered for 150 residents. Food for the party was sponsored Debonairs Pizza and Pedros Flame Grilled Chicken.

Giddeon Brittz and Sharon Moodley of Durban Meals on Wheels, delivered 150 meals to the block of flats.

“Meals on Wheels delivers meals on a regular basis. During the festive season, we always deliverer something special,” she said.

Lantern Heath’s chairperson, Pops Ramdhani said many residents have fallen on hard times since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are very grateful for the efforts made by everyone. There are a lot of underprivileged people living in the building, and it’s so good to see the camaraderie as they share a meal together. We are excited because we can see the smiles on their faces. It has been a tough time for many resident,” he said.

“Covid-19 has contributed in so many ways. There are a lot people who are unemployed and can’t afford a Christmas lunch. There are a lot of pensioners and, with a meagre pension, you can’t do a lot. We are so grateful to the sponsors and volunteers who made this day possible,” said Ramdhani.

Meals on Wheels also hosted a lunch for a few of its other beneficiaries at its Umbilo premises last week.
