Fraudster racks up R5.9m, sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

This follows two recent fraud cases where the accused faced lengthy prison sentences.

THIS week, the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Saloshni Naidoo (41) to 10 years imprisonment.

Naidoo pleaded guilty to fraud amounting to R5.9 million.

Last week, the court sentenced Yolandie Bartlett (41) to an effective 12 years imprisonment for fraud that amounted to R8m, while Nadeem Arshad (39) was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in November after he was convicted of 26 counts of fraud and one count of money laundering.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said Naidoo, who worked in the finance department of Illovo Sugar, stole the money over a three-year period.

“She would divert the stolen monies into her bank account as well as that of a family member and a friend,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

According to the NPA, the company learned about Naidoo’s fraudulent action when another employee reported her to management.

“In trying to recover the monies, the company was able to retrieve R2m from her bank account and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was granted an order to the value of R720 000,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

“The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes this sentence,” she concluded.
