UIP to restore Albert Park precinct

The Albert Park Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) cleaned buildings and streets in the area.

IN a bid to uplift and restore the area, the newly-formed Albert Park Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) recently took to Diakonia Avenue for a clean-up drive. The Albert Park Precinct spans from Diakonia Avenue to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street, Anton Lembede Street, Alexandra Steet and Margaret Mncadi Avenue near the Durban Harbour.

Armed with brooms, spades and ladders, the team set to work cleaning up sand and oil deposits, removing weeds and alien shrubs on the verges, removing vegetation growing on buildings, cleaning up broken glass, removing fallen branches, cleaning the median as well as the park entrance.

Beverly Pillay, the administrative co-ordinator for Albert Park UIP, said there is still a lot of work to do in the area.

“Albert Park Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) responds directly to the urgent need to address the increasing urban decay, poverty, crime, loss of investor confidence and the decline of tourism in the Albert Park Precinct. Community engagement started in September 2021 and the Albert Park UIP was officially registered in October 2021,” said Pillay.

She said the UIP plans to continue this work on a regular basis.

“We have many clean up operations planned and envision this becoming a daily occurrence from the start of 2022,” she said.

By beautifying Albert Park, the UIP hopes to uplift the area.

“Our aim is to enhance service delivery by providing supplementary cleaning and security services in the Albert Park Precinct as we believe that a clean area is a safe area. One of our goals is to also restore Albert Park to a vibrant, local attraction and to have the park fully functional with events,” said Pillay.

The UIP has several projects lined up, with a range of tasks on its to-do-list. These include: improving lighting, deploying a security patrol vehicle and repairing pot holes and damaged pavements. The UIP is calling on the community to join the cause.
