KZN employs more than 900 social workers to support GBV victims

The social workers are graduate social workers who have not been employed since they left university.

THE KwaZulu-Natal government has employed hundreds of social workers to provide much-needed support to victims of gender-based violence (GBV).

The Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza said R23 220 000 was set aside for the employment of social workers who will give a much-needed boost to the work done by the department to fight the scourge.

She added that 967 social workers will be tasked with ensuring victims are well-prepared to face the perpetrators in court and, therefore, ensure successful prosecutions.

“The province is saddled by the scourge of gender-based violence, including rape and abuse, which leaves victims shattered for life.

“There are about 967 social workers employed and deployed across the province, with each district receiving 80 social workers, while eThekwini receives 167 social workers, due to its vastness. These social workers reported for duty from December 1, 2021 and are employed on four-month contracts,” said the MEC.

She added that the social workers will reinforce teams that are currently implementing the department’s mandate. This includes the implementation of preventative measures and education.
