Court sentences murderers to life imprisonment after central Durban shooting

Police rushed to the scene after they received reports of a shooting.

THE Durban High Court sentenced Sabatha Mbatha (30) and Sabelo Khuzwayo (24) to life imprisonment for murder, 25 years for unlawful possession of firearms and five years for attempted murder.

The sentence was handed down on Tuesday, November 30. SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said two victims were shot on Joe Slovo Street (Field Street) and David Webster Street (Leopold Street) on December 18, 2019.

As police arrived on the scene, they found Musawenkosi Mnyandu (60) had sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach.

“Another bystander, who was a taxi driver, was also shot and wounded. Both victims were taken to a hospital for medical attention. Mnyandu died on arrival at the hospital. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation and were investigated by the Provincial Taxi Task Team. It was established that the deceased was a taxi owner affiliated to the Umzinyathi Taxi Association,” said Mbele.

Mbele said the two accused were caught while trying to flee the crime scene.

“They were found in possession of two pistols and ammunition. They were arrested on charges of murder as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition,” she said.
