Durban Central SAPS arrests man for discharging gun in public

This follows a spate of arrests for illegal fire arms.

A 46-YEAR-OLD man was arrested for discharging an unlicensed firearm in public at the weekend. Durban Central police were quick to apprehend the suspect.

According to Sergeant Zanele Khomo of the Durban Central SAPS, police were patrolling the area on Saturday, November 27 at about 21:00 when they heard gunshots.

“The community informed them about an unknown male who was walking on the street with a firearm in his hand. Members drove towards Dr Pixley Kaseme Street, where they spotted the man,” said Khomo.

Police instructed the man to place his firearm on the ground. Instead, the man pointed the firearm at the sky and fired one shot. Police moved in from behind and apprehend the suspect.

“The suspect resisted getting inside the van and hit himself on the head against the van during the arrest. A 9mm pistol with five live rounds was removed from the suspect. The suspect was arrested and will be charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public,” said Khomo.

The suspect is in hospital, under police guard, for medical attention. He will appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
