City reveals operational plans ahead of festive season

The provincial integrated festive season safety plan will run up to January 31, 2022.

AS part of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government’s efforts to combat the spread of Covid-19 infections and crime in the festive season, Premier Sihle Zikalala launched an integrated safety campaign at Durban Amphitheatre on Tuesday morning.

Zikalala along with MEC for transport, community safety and liaison; Peggy Nkonyeni, and eThekwini Municipality mayor; Mxolisi Kaunda outlined plans.

The premier said criminals know that this is a season where large sums of money will be changing hands.

“We want the people, tourists and people who reside here to enjoy the peaceful festive season that will remain unforgettable. We know that criminals also know that this will be a period where there will be increased activity. Our law enforcement agencies will be on high alert,” said Zikalala.

There was also a meet and greet at the Durban beachfront to engage with tourists and people along the beach.

The provincial government said they are working hand-in-hand with the office of the KZN Police Service Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and the head of the road traffic inspectorate Victor Chetty. What’s more they have developed a comprehensive crime prevention strategy in line with the national crime strategy for the festive season and beyond.

Re-elected eThekwini mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the campaign and said the city will ensure  tourist attractions are clean. They will be deploying their solid waste and cleansing teams for extended periods to ensure that these venues are spotlessly clean.

“As it is customary, there will be childminders stationed on the beach whose responsibility will be to reunite lost children with their parents,” he said.

Kaunda said as the country has begun to experience the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, their operational teams will be posted in strategic points to ensure that visitors comply with non-pharmaceutical measures of wearing a mask, observing social distance, and washing/sanitizing of hands to minimise the spread of this pandemic.
