Councillor tackles substation

She encouraged residents to report any substation vandalism to law enforcement and to their local ward councillor.

WARD 31’s councillor, Remona Mckenzie welcomed the repairs that were carried out at the vandalised Kilburn substation.

Mckenzie said residents in the Musgrave area alerted her to the issues at the substation.

The fence around the substation, as well as the door leading into the substation, were recently vandalised.

“The community had no lights for two days due to the vandalism of the substation. This has been an ongoing problem for years, not only in the Berea area but Morningside and our neighbouring areas. The problem is copper cable theft. At the Kilburn substation we put in solid structures, such as steel doors, so it’s more difficult to get in. Hopefully it resolves the problem,” she said.

Mckenzie said this substation feeds a major part of Musgrave.

“They can report the problem to their councillor so that it can be escalated and the municipality can be informed that vandalism has occurred. We have even started a WhatsApp group when there is an issue,” said Mckenzie.

eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said the damage to the substation was attended to timeously.

“Just over a week ago, the door and the fence to the Kilburn substation were vandalised. Luckily, when Musgrave residents reported the incident, no damage had been done to the substation itself, therefore supply for Musgrave residents and surrounding areas were not affected. The damage was repaired the same week. The protection of all electricity infrastructure is extremely important as it helps ensure constant power for all areas under the City’s area of supply,” he said.

Cllr Mckenzie urged residents to contact her on 081 041 5404 or via email at remona.mckenzie@gmail.com.
