City confirms the closure of libraries

Umbilo and Windermere libraries expire on November 30.

PLANS are afoot to relocate the Umbilo and Windermere Libraries to council-owned properties.

Last week, Windermere Centre confirmed the news that the Windermere Library would close and shared a heartfelt message on its Facebook page.

“We are saddened by this as we love the educational safe haven that the library provides for our customers, but we remain hopeful that the library will be reopened again by the municipality in the future, and we promise to keep you informed,” said the centre.

Amanda Madlala, a student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), said she relies on the library for research and study.

“This is terrible news. I was hoping that they would reopen because so many people rely on them for studies and WiFi for research as studying requires data,” said Madlala.

Umbilo resident, Ayanda Mbatha echoed Madlala’s sentiments.

“It’s been a while since I have seen this place open to the public. It is frustrating and sad that they are closing the library without any concrete plans on where the new libraries will be situated,” she said.

The City’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said the leases to the Umbilo and Windermere libraries expire this week (30 November 2021).

“Plans are afoot to move the two libraries to council-owned properties. In the meantime, residents can make use of all of the other eThekwini Municipal Libraries, except Reservoir Hills Library, which was burnt down during riots and Dassenhoek, which was damaged and looted,” Mayisela said.
