eThekwini reconvenes inaugural meeting

The mayoral elections are scheduled to take place at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) today, 24 November.

FOLLOWING the suspension of the inaugural meeting of the eThekwini Municipality Council on Monday due to a power failure, the City has changed the venue for the mayoral elections.

Municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed that the mayoral elections are scheduled to take place at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) today, 24 November.

“The municipality will reconvene the meeting that had to be prematurely closed due to a power outage. Newly elected Municipal Speaker, Thabani Nyawose will preside over the meeting that will see the nomination, election, and swearing in of the mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip of the council,” said Mayisela.

He stated that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will oversee the election proceedings. He said the meeting will begin 13:00 and would end at 14:00.

According to a statement issued by the City on Monday afternoon, the meeting was also disrupted by a group of individuals.

“The municipality is investigating how the security controls were breached,” said the City in a statement.
