KZN Film Commission heads to Nollywood for film fest

This year marks a decade since the Africa International Film Festival's inception.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission will participate in the annual Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) that will be held in Lagos at the Landmark Retail Boulevard from the November 7 to 13.

The festival is attended and supported by writers, actors, directors, film critics, buyers, distributors, visual artists, film students, equipment manufacturers and the international press.

KZN Film Commission COO, Jackie Motsepe will represent South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal as a member of the international jury for the documentary film competition category. The aim of the competition is to celebrate creative excellence in African cinema by recognising African filmmakers.

“We are grateful for the opportunities the KZN Film Commission continues to create for filmmakers. This is a great chance for them to engage with industry professionals, particularly on the backdrop of AFRIFF’s aim of ‘re-establishing Africa’s significance as the last frontier for unique film stories and content development’,” said Motsepe.

The KZN Film Commission called on filmmakers to apply to attend the festival to gain exposure and to network for collaborations.

Two filmmakers who heeded this call are Asivhanzhi Mathaba (Triangle Post and Animation Studios) and Minenhle Luthuli. They will accompany the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission to the festival and exhibit their films and attending Masterclasses with industry professionals.

“This is an excellent opportunity for a plethora of creative properties that will enhance the skill level of South Africans in the film industry,” said Mathaba.

The KN Film Commission participates in festivals, such as AFRIFF, to enhance relations with Nigeria. During AFRIFF there will be two days of intensive engagement.  The aim of these engagements is to grow the KZNFC’s network in Nollywood and seek partnerships for co-production.
