Plant indigenous urges church

Reverend Thokozani Mthembu urged other churches to follow suit and plant indigenous in a time of degradation and pollution.

THE Manning Methodist Church of Southern Africa hosted an indigenous planting day at its grounds in a move to encourage its followers to do the same.

Reverend Thokozani Mthembu said, “Indigenous plants are particularly good at creating habitats and food for wildlife and holding the soil together.

“They are also well adapted to our local climate and therefore do not need much water. This is important in our water-scarce country,” he said.

“This day was an act to give back to creation, and to encourage households and communities to plant indigenous so that we can preserve our endangered environments with the same love God uses to transform our lives,” said Reverend Mthembu.

To the team who gathered for the planting day, he noted the church chose to plant indigenous because of the impact alien invasive plants have had in the Durban area.

“When it comes to the term ‘invasive’, this means that they have been introduced into areas outside of their natural habitat (often by humans) and spread rapidly, often with negative impacts on the indigenous species.

“There is legislation that requires the removal of many of these plants, because of these negative impacts. We need to try and avoid planting these at MRMC,” he said.
