Players net action at league meet

The tournament provided a platform for future netball stars to showcase their talents.

TEAMS from the eThekwini Metro Netball Federation jumped into action at the weekend for the Regional League held at the Hoy Park Sports Grounds in Durban.

The Durban University of Technology beat Umlazi 44 – 23 in a thrilling final and retained their title. The chairperson for eThekwini Metro netball, Balungile Mnyandu said about 54 teams competed and DUT’s team has now moved to division 1.

Mnyandu said it was also used by the federation to identify players to play for the upcoming SPAR Championship that will be held in Cape Town in December.

Mnyandu added the federation aimed to host a closing tournament, however, due to the pandemic, that was not possible.

“We encourage all netball players to protect themselves, especially as we are still living through the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.

Phume Hlongwa, one of the players from Cheetahs Sport Academy, who competed in the tournament, encouraged young girls to give netball a try.
