UPDATE: Drugs worth more than R5k recovered from Morningside crash

The man sped off as police intercepted the transaction.

POLICE confirmed that the man who died in a crash in Morningside on Thursday, October 21, was fleeing from SAPS officers.

SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said a car chase ensued after the Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit intercepted a transaction between two men near the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium.

Police were in the area and were on the lookout after they received information about a possible drug deal.

“As the police officers approached the men, one of them sped off in his vehicle. A chase ensued towards Morningside. At the intersection of Norwood Road and Trematon Drive, the suspect collided with another vehicle. The alleged drug dealer, believed to be in his 30s, died at the scene. The other motorist was transported to hospital for medical attention,” said Naicker.

More than R5 000 worth of drugs were recovered.

“A search of the suspect’s vehicle uncovered drugs such as methcathinone and cocaine. The team also seized cash of R1640, which is suspected to be the proceeds of drug trade. Police have opened a docket for possession of drugs and culpable homicide,” said Naicker.
