Durban Chamber mourns loss of great leader

Andrew Layman (77) died on Saturday after a long illness.

ANDREW Layman, the former CEO for the Durban Chamber, died on Saturday October, 16. The organisation’s president, Nigel Ward extend his sincere condolences to Layman’s family, friends and colleagues.

Layman (77)  died after a long illness. He was described as a committed, compassionate man who loved the city, and was committed to playing a role in the upliftment and development of it.

“He joined the Durban Chamber family in late January 2011, as the newly appointed chief executive officer (CEO), with more than 30 years experinece as a schoolteacher and headmaster. He bought a great deal of focus, principle and guidance during his time as CEO,” said Ward.

Ward said Layman’s passion was to mentor the youth as he wanted to see them succeed and to lead. He played his part in encouraging them to be more engaged and to be at the forefront of public speaking.

“Layman’s knowledge of economics and business played a key role in several initiatives that were run by the Durban Chamber of Commerce,” said Ward.

The current CEO, Palesa Phili echoed Ward’s words when he spoke of Layman.

Quoting an article published by the Berea Mail in 2011, when Layman had just been appointed as the CEO of the Durban Chamber, he said, “I have no regrets, my working life has been good to me.”

Furthermore, Ward said this was a true testament of the man Layman was, a committed man who loved his job and enjoyed his career.

“He truly will be dearly missed by all,” said Ward.
