Suspects arrested for murder after Mayville robbery
SAPS spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele said one of the suspects left their vehicle at the scene of the crime
TWO suspects appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 14 for charges of murder, business robbery and attempted murder.
It is alleged that four armed men held up staff members at a Mayville business premises on King Cetshwayo Highway (Jan Smuts Highway) on October 12 at about 13:45.
“They took an undisclosed amount of cash and robbed the security guards of their shotguns. A 35-year-old security guard was shot in the head and was declared dead on scene while another employee was shot on the shoulder and taken to hospital for medical attention,” said SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

Mbele said the suspects fled the scene in a getaway vehicle. One of the suspect’s vehicles was left behind. Later that day, police received a report of a carjacking at Lamontville SAPS. Police raced to the scene and after interviewing the complainant, discovered that the vehicle reported at Lamontville SAPS was the same vehicle the suspects were seen exiting in Mayville before the robbery.
“The investigation led to the arrest of the suspect (34) who alleged that he had been hijacked. He was charged for perjury and detained at Mayville SAPS,” said Mbele.

“That evening at 23:30, police received information that another suspect was admitted to hospital after being shot by one of the security guards during the robbery. The team proceeded to the hospital where they arrested a 27-year-old suspect. The suspect is still in hospital under police guard. He will appear in court soon once discharged from hospital. Police are still searching for the remaining suspects,” concluded Mbele.
