Durban Central SAPS arrest two armed robbers

Two suspects were arrested while the other two fled the scene. 

TWO of four armed gang members were arrested when they were caught robbing a man of his cellphones and cash near the Butterworth Hotel in Durban on Tuesday, October 5 at 21:15.

The spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said the robbery was in progress when SAPS arrived on the scene. They spotted four suspects, armed with knives and guns, robbing a man.

“The suspects then went into the bus rank. Durban Central members rapidly responded and approached the suspects, who fled in different directions. The suspects were pursued by the members,” said Maphumulo.

Two suspects were arrested while the other escaped.

“The police members chased the suspects on foot and arrested two suspects, who were positively identified by the complainant as the ones who robbed him. The other two suspects got away with the complainant’s three cellphones and R160 in cash,” said Maphumulo.

A second complainant reported another robbery.

“While at the scene, another complainant alleged that he was robbed of his cellphone by four suspects. This complainant positively identified one of the arrested suspects,” said Maphmulo.

The complainant said the suspect pointed a knife at him while the others robbed him.

The two arrested suspects, aged 31 and 40, were detained at Durban Central SAPS for aggravated robbery. Detectives will profile them and attempt to find links to similar cases.

The suspects are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
