Police seek assistance in Durban rape case

An 18-year-old woman reported she was raped and robbed by a man who introduced himself as Thapelo.

THE Durban Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit appealed to the community for assistance with the investigation of a rape case.

According to the KZN SAPS police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, it is alleged that an 18-year-old woman was at Berea Park Road in Essenwood when she was approached by an unknown man. He introduced himself as Thapelo. This was reported to have taken place on January 20, 2021 at about 16:00.

“The victim continued walking and the male followed, overpowered and raped her. He also robbed the victim of her cellphone before fleeing the scene on foot,” she said.

Mbele said charges of robbery and rape were opened at the Berea police station and the docket was transferred to Durban Central FCS Unit for investigation.

“Police believe the male they have an image of can be of assistance in solving the case,” said Mbele.
