Unemployed caregivers with no IDs eligible for Covid-19 SRD grant

SASSA's spokesperson said the special grant would be added to the child support grant the beneficiary already receives.

UNEMPLOYED care-givers, without the 13-digit barcoded South African identification documents who receive child grants, can now apply for the Special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant.

This announcement was made on September 22  by the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu.

According to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) spokesperson, Sandy Godlwana, said, “As government, we have to do everything possible to ensure that we uphold the principles of our sought after constitution, and do everything possible to cushion those in distress during their hour of need”, said Godwana.

In addition, Godwana noted that SASSA has beneficiaries on its grant system who do not have South African identification but are able to receive social grants.

“This category of beneficiaries includes permanent residents, asylum seekers and refugees, among others.  Some of these beneficiaries draw child grants such as child support, care dependency and foster child grants and not necessarily social grants for themselves,” she said.

If a person does not have a 13-digit bar-coded ID number, SASSA is able to allocate a system-generated 7777 identification number to assist with access to the system.

“SASSA calls on the unemployed holders of the 7777 identity number who receive child grants to apply for the Special Covid-19 SRD. They should use their system-generated number, that starts with 7777 that they were allocated when they were first approved for a social grant,” she said.

Godwana said caregivers who do not have their SASSA system-generated identification number that starts with 7777 to contact SASSA on its toll-free number (0800 60 10 11) and request the above-mentioned number.

Once the number has been acquired, they will be able to apply for the Special Covid-19 SRD grant on the SASSA website (https://srd.sassa.gov.za).

“After they have successfully applied for the special grant, it will be paid, together with the child grant they already receive, onto their gold SASSA grant payment card.  They can withdraw their grants at participating supermarkets or at the Post Office,” she said.
