Two suspects caught red-handed in job scam

The victim shouted for help and the police officers, who were in the vicinity, responded swiftly.

DURBAN Central SAPS is urging the community to be aware of bogus employment opportunities after a woman was robbed of her cellphone and R400 cash on September 15.

SAPS officers and Durban Municipal Police officers have since arrested two suspects aged 26 and 35 for common robbery in Durban.

Spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said the woman was promised a job at a high-end retail store.

“It is alleged that yesterday, at approximately 13:00, the complainant was seated at the park near the City Hall in Durban when she was approached by an unknown male who promised her  employment at a store in Durban. After some persuasion, the victim went with the suspect. They went to another building in Durban, where they were joined by another male who seemed like he was also promised employment,” he added.

Maphumulo said the suspect told the woman that no bags were allowed in the area where the employment form would be filled out. “She apparently left her bag with the other male, while they went inside.   After a while the victim got suspicious, and found the two males leaving with her property, including a cellphone and R400 cash which was in a bag,” said Maphumulo.
