Men arrested for illegal possession of firearm, live ammunition

During their search, the Phoenix Tactical Response Team found a black 9mm norinco pistol with live ammunition under the driver's seat.

THREE men were arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and live ammunition during a patrol by the Phoenix Tactical Response Team (TRT) on the N3, opposite Berea Centre, on September 8.

Captain Phumzile Makaula, from Umbilo SAPS, said the team was patrolling on the N3 when they spotted a suspicious silver-grey Polo Vivo.

“TRT stopped and searched the vehicle. There were two passengers and the driver. It is alleged that they searched the vehicle and found a black 9mm norinco pistol with six live ammunition under the driver’s seat,” she said.

According to Makaula, the passengers claimed they used an e-hailing service and were being transported to a mall in Westville by the driver.

Police are investigating a case of unlawful possession of a firearm and live ammunition.
