Residents rally behind beloved Durban restaurant

While it is not clear if the restaurant is closing, scores of social media users replied to the post, with some suggesting a fundraiser be held.

SOCIAL media was buzzing on Monday, September 6 as residents from across Durban and surrounds rallied behind a beloved Durban restaurant. The Berea Mail reached out to a few residents to find out more.

When Amanda Beissner, from Durban North, posed a question on a Facebook group, she did not expect her post to rack up more than 100 comments. In her post, Beisser asked if Blue Zoo at Mitchell Park in Morningside was on the brink of closing.

While it is not clear if the restaurant is closing, scores of social media users replied to the post, with some suggesting a page should be set up to raise funds to save the cafe.

“My father, who is 86, loves going to Blue Zoo. He worked for the Parks Department and was stationed at Mitchell Park for a few years. He has many fond memories of the place. He also enjoys seeing (the staff), and listening to the piano there. I felt a bit devastated when I heard that it might be closing and posted online to find out more. It would be great if someone could start a page to raise funds and we would definitely contribute,” said Beisser.

Pat Sunkel, who has lived in Durban since 1969, said the restaurant has been an important feature of her childhood.

“Blue Zoo means a lot to us as we’ve been going there since my late parents took me to Mitchell Park which we visited many times after arriving in Durban from Swaziland. We just love the restaurant, which has the best curry, sandwiches and generally the whole menu. We also love the beautiful gardens, the flowers and the little zoo. We are extremely sad and even more so for the lovely owners. We want Blue Zoo to stay open,” she said.

The Berea Mail reached out to Blue Zoo, however, they did not send their comment at the time this article was published.
