Local Mothwa Shellhole celebrates 70th birthday

According to Hitchcock, Tray Bang was started on August 22, 1951.

THE atmosphere at Stella Sports Club on Helen Joseph Road, Berea, was charged with excitement as the women of Tray Bang Mothwa Shellhole hosted their 70th birthday celebration in style on Saturday.

Speaking to the Berea Mail, Lady Billie, Louisa Hitchcock, said she was thrilled to be part of the 70th anniversary.

According to Hitchcock, Tray Bang was started on August 22, 1951.

“We have a long history of working hard to support our two havens, one that caters for frail and aged in Moore Road and one that caters for independent living in Deodar Avenue. We are here today to celebrate with all our members,” said Hitchcock.

She said currently they have a membership of 25 people and hoped to grow the Shellhole.

“I encourage ladies to join MOTHWA Shellhole as we desperately need people who are prepared to do some work and help us because we are a dying organisation and most of the people are over 70 years of age. We need the next generation,” she said.

She said Mothwa, which stands for Memorable Order of Tin Hats Womens Auxillary, was started in the early 1940s following the establishment of the M.O.T.H order which were all servicemen.

“To qualify to be a member it is not necessary to be the wife or female relative of a serving or ex-serviceman. Candidates should be 18 years and older. All is welcome to join the Mothwa organisation. We do raffles, cakes sales at mini markets and Tray Bang Shellhole has been fortunate to get a thrift shop at Queensmead Mall which is bringing them a lot of funds,” said Hitchcock.

Furthermore, Mothwa Haven has been operational for nearly 60 years with an aging building that requires repairs.
