Anti-GBV campaign rings in Women’s Day at Bay of Plenty

Amnesty International, Active Citizen's Movement and Women's Cultural Group were among the organisations involved in the campaign.

AN anti-gender-based-violence (GBV) campaign was staged today, Women’s Day (August 9) as several organisations banded together to distribute flyers along the Durban promenade.

Coral Vinsen, chairperson for Amnesty International, was among those distributing flyers near the Bay of Plenty on the Durban promenade.

“We started the Durban group of Amnesty International in 1991. The first members were anti- apartheid activists. We were from the Black Sash and Durban Detainees Support Committee and other anti-apartheid activists groups,” she said.

“Every Women’s Day our group decided to do something to focus on human rights issues and women’s rights are human rights. We started in 2019 to address gender-based violence. Last year, because of lockdown, we weren’t able to do much, so this year, we decided to revive our activity around abuse. We printed flyers which have useful information for people who are being abused- where to go for help,” added Vinsen.

GBV increased during the Covid-19 lockdown period.

“People are at home more, so they are more accessible. The increase of abuse and rape of women has been greater,” she said.

Also joining the initiative was Taiwo Kazeem.
“It’s a wonderful initiative for the group involved, coming out to let people know that there are still people who can help them,” he said.
