Durban NPO donates 120 food parcels to Umbilo families

Gumede said initially they were helping residents by donating their own items until they were also left with nothing.

DURBAN-BASED non-profit organisation, Child of Africa recently distributed more than 120 food parcels to families in Umbilo who were affected by the recent unrest.

The handover took place last Thursday at Child of Africa Preparatory and Primary School.

Speaking to Berea Mail chairperson for the NPO, Nelly Gumede said they were prompted to embark on this project following an influx of phone calls from residents who were requesting food.

Gumede said initially they were helping residents by donating their own items until they were also left with nothing.

“Richard La Colombe (NPO founder) said let’s start looking for sponsorships and we got vegetables from Johannesburg. The vegetables were healthy for the people and we appreciated that. It is good to know that there is somebody who is going to have a meal from us as an organisation,” said Gumede.

She said she appreciated the people who supported the campaign.

“When they received the food parcels they were so happy and excited. We were quite happy that we could bring a smile to someone’s face and change some thoughts for a person who didn’t know what to cook for the day,” she added.

Joice Pakkies, one of the recipients of the food parcel, which included mealie meal, vegetables and cooking oil, said: “I thank Child of Africa for the food. I am going to have a nice, healthy lunch because of them. You were brought by God’s purpose into our lives. You saved our lives. I had a little mealie meal and was waiting for my Sassa pay out but now I have got everything that I was short of. I can’t thank you enough.”
