Gauteng lends a hand to KZN with 36 tons of essential food

GAUTENG based, NPO, Food For Life (FFL) has assisted more than 120 000 victims of the KZN riots.

The food-relief organisation said they distributed more than 36 tons of essential food items in KZN through more than 1200 parcels designed to last a family of four for one month.

Vinesh Maharaj, chairperson of FFL Midrand said: “We launched our social media campaign to raise awareness for this project and were inundated with requests for food. These requests are still continuing for many reasons, including the unemployment that has resulted from the rioting.”

“The food relief would not have been possible without corporate support. A huge thank you and appreciation to all of our generous donors, both business and individuals, who heeded our call for donations. In addition, we would like to thank Viveshen Naidoo and Chantel Smith from Petro Gulf for sponsoring the fuel that was required by our transporter, Yashveer Haripersaad from Delta Consolidators, who also did not charge for the many loads required,” added Maharaj.

In a statement, FFL said they sprung into action after the KZN riots to provide assistance to those left destitute in the province.

“Due to supply chain disruptions in the KZN region, the food had to be sourced in Gauteng and transported to KZN once the N3 was reopened.  FFL Midrand partnered with local sustainable development company, LTM Energy, to raise awareness for this campaign, as well as much needed funds to purchase the required food and toiletries,” read the statement.
