“We just formed the new CPF group and at our first meeting, one of our members was walking down the staircase (at Berea SAPS) and said, ‘ look at the mess here.’ So we decided to clean it up and show people that we care about SAPS. They have brought the crime rate down, they have done a great job. We are here to support them and let our community know that we need to get behind SAPS. To make things work, we need to be informers and keep in touch with each other – in that way we will control crime in the area. For now, we are cleaning up for the station that serves us,” he said.

Busi Ntshingila, another member of the CPF committee, said the clean up promoted unity in the area.

“We all need to come together – whether it is helping the police or doctors. We need to start helping one another, being a society again and bring back that beautiful South African spirit. As the new CPF, we are going to be very active. We are going to ask the community to get involved,” she added.

Commenting on the clean-up, spokesperson for the Berea SAPS, Captain Poobalan Naidoo said: “The management and staff at Berea SAPS are very grateful for what the CPF is doing and we are very excited about the CPF coming on board with us. Crime is being reduced in the area because of efforts of SAPS and their partners including the CPF, patrollers and security companies in the area.”
