Morningside resident praises Berea detectives, security company

Speaking about the incident, Calvin De Reuck said the incident occurred on 9 June at a guest house in Morningside.

A MORNINGSIDE resident has praised the efforts of security personnel and Berea SAPS detectives whose efficient work led to the arrest of a suspect and recovery of the item stolen during a recent business robbery.

Speaking about the incident, Calvin De Reuck said the incident occurred on 9 June at a guest house in Morningside.

According to Reuck, a television was stolen during the robbery.

“There was only one suspect, a man in his mid-30s who stays at a shelter in South Beach. He was a security guard at the time at the business property next to us. During the time of the robbery, we had to close the guesthouse for fumigation purposes so no one was allowed to stay or be on the property,” he said.

De Reuck said the guesthouse was closed from 6 to 11 June.

When they returned on the Friday, they had to take stock of the 15 rooms before the new owners could take over.

This is when he noticed one of the TVs were missing.

“I notified the owner and we checked the CCTV footage. I picked up the suspect wandering around. I phoned the fumigation company to confirm if he was a part of his team and they said no but they noticed that the fumigation tent was cut open. The suspect also bashed in our wooden gate that’s close to the room where he stole the television from,” he said.

Miraculously, a few days later, De Reuck spotted the suspect, who had been caught on the CCTV footage in the area.

“I automatically thought he was breaking into the guesthouse again, so I called Blue Security.”

“They came within minutes and apprehended the suspect. We questioned him and he confessed that he broke into the guesthouse. Blue Security then called SAPS to take over the matter.”

“Ever since the robbery, Berea SAPS have been absolutely amazing with communicating and coming in and out the property to work on the case,” he said.

Captain Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS commended the Berea detectives.

“The case was allocated to Det/ Cst LN Buthelezi who with the help of Det/Sgt ZP Cele and Det/Cst ML Dorasamy worked tirelessly to get the suspect and recover the stolen property. The complainant’s flat screen television was taken in a business break-in. Through information received, the television was recovered in South Beach,” said Capt Naidoo.
