Durban NPO hosts blanket drive to spread warmth this winter

The non-profit organisation aims to encourage people with Down Syndrome to fulfil their potential.

DURBAN organisation, You’re Magical is hosting a blanket drive to collect blankets and clothes for those in need this winter.

The non-profit organisation aims to encourage people with Down Syndrome to fulfil their potential by raising awareness about Down Syndrome and promoting inclusively.

Founder, Trudy Chetty said this is the first blanket drive hosted by the organisation.

“We are hosting the blanket drive for the first time this winter due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The unemployment rate has shot up and with Covid-19 in the mix, we decided to do the drive this year,” she said.

Chetty said she was inspired to start the blanket drive when she saw the need on the Durban streets.

“I saw some children sleeping on the side of Argyle Road and I had many people ask me for assistance with warm clothes and blankets. The aim of the blanket drive is to assist as many families, shelters and individuals as possible,” she said.

She is also collecting pre-owned clothing.

“The community can assist by contacting me if they have clothing or blankets to drop off to distribute to the underprivileged,” she said.
