Suspect injured in shootout with Umbilo SAPS

The suspect was shot in his thigh when he attempted to open fire on police.

FOUR suspects, who were in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and a housebreaking implement, were arrested by Umbilo SAPS Task Team yesterday (23 June) at 19:50.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were arrested near the Cato Manor Sports Ground. 

Captain Phumzile Makaula, from Umbilo SAPS, said the Umbilo SAPS Task Team was patrolling the area when they spotted a black Hyundai Accent with a GP registration parked on Rick Turner Road.

According to police, the occupants of the vehicle seemed suspicious. 

“Police approached the vehicle and the suspects drove off. A chase then ensued. As police approached the Cato Manor Sports Ground, one of the task team members fired a shot in the air and the suspects stopped,” she said.

She added that one suspect jumped out of the vehicle and pointed a firearm at one of the officers.

“Another member of the task team shot the suspect in his thigh. Police recovered one unlicensed revolver, five live rounds, one firearm replica and one housebreaking implement,” said Capt Makaula.

She added that the injured suspect was taken to King Edward hospital under police guard.
