Tearful Father’s Day as elderly Durban dad remains missing since December

Gonseel 'Dougie' Nelson went missing on 9 December and his vehicle was found on 15 December in an open parking bay on Beatrice Street.

IT was a sombre Father’s Day for the Nelson family on Sunday as June marked six months since father, Gonseel ‘Dougie’ Nelson went missing.

“It’s been over six months and my elderly dad has still not been found. With teary eyes, we entered Father’s Day still not knowing where he is,” said son of the missing man, Bradley Nelson.

Gonseel, who is known to the community as Dougie, went missing on 9 December last year, added son, Adrian Nelson.

“His vehicle was found on 15 December in an open parking bay on Beatrice Street,” said Nelson.

“Father’s Day is a day we always celebrate and this time, my father wasn’t home. Before Father’s Day he missed out on a lot of milestone occasions. He missed Christmas, New Year’s, his wedding anniversary and younger son’s birthday and now, Father’s Day as well,” he said.

“My father was 75 when he went missing, but his birthday was on 19 January and he turned 76,” added Nelson.

Gonseel was last seen in Chatsworth at a friend’s residence.

“It’s difficult especially for us as his children. It’s really taking a toll on the whole family, my father’s sibling and our extended family. Not knowing where he is creates a lot of worry because we don’t know what to expect,” said Nelson.

Gonseel is bald, has a slim build, brown eyes and is about 1.65 metres tall.

The Nelson family has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
