Glenwood residents face two-week water outage

Resident, Dave Freedman believes the water meter was stolen on Monday, 3 May.

A GLENWOOD resident has been left high and dry with no water at his home since the water meter outside his property disappeared about two weeks ago.

Resident, Dave Freedman believes the water meter was stolen on Monday, 3 May.

“I reported the matter on the same day to the municipality. We were told that someone was going to come to take a look. A day and a half later, someone did come and they realised the pipe was broken too far down and they needed someone to break the concrete to reach the pipe. That took another four or five days. They connected a temporary plastic piece and stopped the water.

“For eight days, water was spewing out into the road. We had water everywhere outside our house, and no water inside. We were filling up bottles from where the water was spewing out from the broken pipe,” said Freedman.

Since the water was switched off, Freedman has been receiving water from his neighbour.

“Since we don’t have water, we had to learn to adjust. When I got the hosepipe from my neighbour, I used the high pressure spray and sprayed all the cutlery and crockery that we had built up and couldn’t wash over the week. We had all the plates spread out in the garden,” he said.

While living without water in his home has posed a challenge, Freedman said he was also concerned about the amount of water that was wasted.

“We estimate about 100 000 litres of water were wasted,” he said.

The Glenwood resident said he cannot be reconnected to the water supply until the new water meter is installed.

“We are waiting for the new meter to come. Once the meter comes they will connect us to the mains again,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality did not send their comment at the time this article went to press.
